Alex De Minaur into semis as Bernard Tomic retires after 39 minutes, Cameron Norrie also through
Bernard Tomic’s Atlanta Open run came to a frustrating end in the quarter-final as he was forced to retire from his match against Alex De Minaur.
World No 106 Tomic headed to Atlanta on the back of first-round exits at Wimbledon and Newport, but he stunned fifth seed Frances Tiafoe in the first round and then beat Matthew Ebden in his second match.
However, his tournament came to an end in the last eight as he retired with an injury with De Minaur leading 6-2, 3-0.
Third seed De Minaur will next face Reilly Opelka for a place in the final after the American beat British No 3 Daniel Evans 7-6 (7/3), 7-5.
“It’s not ideal obviously for him, but I’ll take this any day of the week. I got here to play some good tennis, and ended up with the win,” the Australian said. “I hope Bernard gets better and recovers, and hopefully he’s all good for the next tournament.”
Second seed Taylor Fritz also advanced as he got the better of Miomir Kecmanovic, beating the Serb 6-1, 7-6 (7-1).

He will face Norrie in the semi-final after the British No 2 beat Australia’s Alexei Popyrin 7-5, 6-4.
“I’m pumped to get through that. It wasn’t easy because he’s young, up-and-coming and talented,” Norrie said after reaching his third last four of the year. “It’s another semi-final now, so I’m just going to look to keep my level and keep pushing for more.”
